Soldering Equipment & Steps Involved in Soldering

SOLDERING: ‘Soldering’ is a term used to describe the process of combining two separate metals together. Once heated and molten, solder acts as a kind of glue to conjoin metal surfaces. This point of conjunction where solder paste holds two surfaces together is frequently referred to as the ‘solder joint.’

SOLDERING IRON: A soldering iron is a hand tool used in soldering. It supplies heat to melt solder so that it can flow into the joint between two workpieces.

SOLDARING IRON TIPS:

All soldering irons is an interchangeable part at the end which is known as a soldering tip. There are varieties of tip and they come in different shapes and sizes. Each tip is used for a specific purpose and offers a distinct advantage over another. Most common tips we use in electronics projects making or repairing are …..

Conical Tip –These are used in precision electronics soldering for their fine edge. Because of its pointed end, it’s able to deliver heat to smaller areas without affecting its surroundings.

Chisel Tip – These tips are used for soldering wires or other larger components because of their broad flat edge.

Soldering Iron Tips

SOLDERING IRON STAND: A soldering iron stand sometimes come with Spring holder to keeps the iron away from flammable materials, and often also comes with a cellulose sponge and flux pot for cleaning the tip.

SOLDER WIRE: Solder wire is available in a range of thicknesses for hand-soldering (manual soldering is performed using a soldering iron.

DESOLDERING WIRE OR SOLDER WICK:  is finely braided 18 to 42 AWG copper wire coated with rosin flux, usually supplied on a roll. The end of a length of braid is placed over the soldered connections of a component being removed.

DESOLDERING PUMP: A Desoldering Pump, colloquially known as a solder sucker, is a manually-operated device which is used to suck the solder away from a printed circuit board.

SOLDER PASTE: Soldering Paste is a mixture used for bonding parts of metals together. Solder paste flux serves a threefold purpose, 1) Removing any oxidized metal from the surfaces to be soldered. 2) Sealing out air, preventing further oxidation. 3) Improving wetting characteristics of liquid solder by facilitating amalgamation.

WIRE STRIPPER: A wire stripper or wire cutter is a tool for removing the insulation from electric wires.

SOLDERING STATION:  A soldering station is a multipurpose power soldering device designed for electronic components soldering. Different tools are used for different applications and soldering stations may be equipped with more than one of them at a time. . Some time it is also called Hot Air Desoldering Station with LED Display, Hot air rework station with digital LED display, etc. The main tools for soldering are- 1. contact soldering irons; 2. hot air gun; 3.  desoldering tweezers or SMD hot tweezers; 4. desoldering gun; 5. infrared heater.

HOT AIR GUN: Hot air gun of soldering station heats up to 500°C in 10-25 seconds and keeps its temperature. Ideal for desoldering SOIC, CHIP, QFP, PLCC, BGA and mainly used for repairing SMD boards like mobile phones, laptops, other circuit boards etc.
